Love :: Containers for Pantry Staples

This is a second post about something I love. I’m considering a reoccurring “Things I Love Thursdays;” what do you think? It won’t be every Thursday, ’cause there just aren’t that many things that I love enough to feel they are worthy of sharing. I mean, I can think of about 3-4 more items, and one of them falls into the TMI category, so I’m going to have to gather some gumption to write about that. (That item, btw, I’ve been recommending for about 15 years, and I can list my converts! Which of course I won’t do in my post.)

Anyway, I’ve been mulling over this post for a week or so and when I came across this post recently, I thought it was a sign. (More about that post in a minute if you want to wait to click over.)

How do you store your flour and sugar? I’m not a big fan of the containers many use and leave out on their counters. Most of the kitchens I’ve had have had limited counter space, and I haven’t been willing to sacrifice any of it for staples that can go in the pantry. Growing up (sorry Mom!) mom just kept the flour and sugar in the pantry in their original bags. There are a couple of problems with this. 1. They take up more room than they have to because they don’t stack. 2. They are susceptible to  vermin. 3. They are horribly messy when trying to scoop out a cup of flour from a bag that is 2/3 empty.

Several (many?) years ago I was visiting a friend’s beach house and saw this idea. Use large plastic containers! There are several brands of “disposable” (i.e., inexpensive) plastic containers sold at any grocery store. They stack, bugs can’t get in and best of all, it is so easy to scoop out what ever you need when cooking! (The ones shown on the left are 8 cup/64 oz size.)

A few days ago I came across a post on the website Just Something I Made about decals that you can print for containers. Up to this point, I’ve had the actual label from the bag taped on with a wide sloth of clear packing tape, but these are so cute (and I think I can justify changing out my containers as long as I’ve been using these) that I do believe I’ll print these off update my containers. (If you’re an “on the counter” storer of staples, she has decals for those as well.)

Containers for my pantry staples – it has made cooking with them so much easier! This is something I love.
