Years ago I posted a recipe for doggie mini-meatloaves that I cooked for our then-best dog Annie (RIP). I haven’t made those in a while, but I have been trying my hand a few times at making dog treats for the current masters of the house, Sofie and Pearl. After several tries, I finally found something that is easy, healthy, and (most importantly) gets a five-star puppy approval.
I love this recipe because after you make your base, you can add different flavors depending on your dog’s preferences. I made three different flavors of dog treats including apple, pumpkin, and cheese. Cheese is my favorite because of how it really comes out as a crunchy treat. But if you try it, I encourage you to play around with whatever flavors your dog loves.
Ingredients
3 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup oats
½ cup coconut oil, melted
2 eggs
Water
Flavor Ingredients*: shredded cheese, pumpkin, apple sauce
Directions
For Base:
Mix flour and oats in a large bowl.
In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, add the melted oil, and mix again.
Add liquid to dry ingredients.
Mix to form a crumble texture.
I divided this base into three parts and added a flavor to each of the parts:
1 cup shredded cheese + 1/3 cup water
¾ cup of canned pumpkin
½ cup apple sauce
You could also make one flavor & triple the amount of the flavor.
Mix the base with one of the flavor ingredients to get a dough-like consistency. Roll out on a flat surface to about 1/3 inch thickness and cut with a cookie cutter. You may need to add a bit more flour when adding flavors that have some liquid (apple sauce or pumpkin). Dryer ingredients (cheese) may require more water. But, add both sparingly and mix well before adding more.
Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment or a cookie mat and bake on air fryer mode at 425 for 15 minutes. If your oven doesn’t have an air fryer mode, you can bake or use convection mode but watch to make sure they don’t get too brown.
*Other flavors I think would work well for dog treats include banana, peanut butter, or sweet potato.
