Support Childhood Literacy :: Ferst Readers

The single most powerful predictor of a child’s early educational success is simple: being introduced to books and read to at home before starting school. Children who are read to at least three times a week by a family member are almost twice as likely to score in the top 25% in reading compared to those who are read to less often.

Support Childhood Literacy through Ferst Readers

I grew up in a home where finding joy in books wasn’t just encouraged—it was expected. I can’t imagine my childhood without shelves full of stories and the sound of someone reading aloud. I have cherished memories of Winnie the Pooh, Beatrix Potter, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and even a little Shakespeare.

That’s why it breaks my heart to know that over 60% of low-income households have no books at all. No shelves to browse. No bedtime stories to spark a lifelong love of reading.

This is why I serve on the Board of Ferst Readers, a nonprofit literacy program that delivers bookstore-quality, age-appropriate books to children every month from birth to their fifth birthday—completely free to the child and their family. Each book arrives with a parent guide filled with conversation starters, key vocabulary, and fun activities to help the story come alive and build critical early literacy skills.

While September is National Literacy Month, every day is the right day to share the gift of books. Just $42 sponsors a child for an entire year—one brand-new book and parent resource every month. A gift of $21 covers six months of stories and learning.

In 2024, Ferst Readers reached more than 50,000 children across 11 states. With your support, we can reach even more, helping thousands of kids start school ready to succeed.
