Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Happy Mardi Gras & Fat Tuesday, and in honor of the day, I want to share with you one of my favorite songs from my friend Derek T’s CD Kiss on the Wind. The song features Jo-EL Sonnier on the accordian, a well-respected Cajun musician.

Evangeline

Down in Evangeline that Cajun Mardi Gras
Makes a boy a man; it’s a rite of passage in the swamp
The French call it Courir, runs in our bayou blood
A far cry from Bourbon Street on gravel and red mud

Beggin’ the townfolk for onions, rice and roux
Purple, green and gold parade of crazy costumed fools
Drinkin’ beer and eatin’ boudin soon as the sun comes up
Doin’ handstands on horseback, everything a coonass loves

Down in Evangeline, Louisianne
Laissez les bon temps rouler
Down in Evangeline we’re bringing back
A feast on Fat Tuesday

Wait for the flag young fellas, the capitaine says
Don’t you get overzealous, don’t chase those chickens yet
You gotta sing and dance for farmer Thibodeaux
So he’ll throw a big fat hen down from his roof for your gumbo

Chorus

Later on at the evenin’ fais dos dos

Everyone will be groovin’ to Zydeco
Singing Hey Good Lookin’
And you know what we’ll be cookin’

Chorus

Chorus

Laissez les bon temps rouler
All the way to Ash Wednesday.
