Final Two Challenges and a Start to a New Year

Hey folks, I’ve been away for a few days, so that is why you haven’t heard much. I have a lot to catch up on, including a review of my first book for 2010 and a guest review, but first two more challenges – and I promise these are the last two.

First, there is “24.”

Basically, this challenge is about limiting…not expanding. It is limiting the number of books purchased this year to 24. It was started over on Stuck In A Book. I joined this one for my hubby. 😉 No, seriously, I joined this because I have an addiction to obtaining books. We came home last night after being out of town, and there were two books in the mail. Today, three more arrived from Amazon. I borrowed one on NYE from a friend (from whom I already have one other), and I bought another for myself the week of Christmas when I went into B&N to buy books for my parents. I can’t resist.

So, for this challenge I am vowing to purchase no more than 24 books this year, and actually, want to beat this by way more than 24 – like really about 12. This does not include books obtained through PaperBackSwap – since those books only cost me the price of shipping one of mine away – or ACR books. And so I will add to my challenge page a list of books I have purchased – trying to keep that list as small as possible.

On a different but related note, I’ve decided to catalog all of my IPO-TBR books (in possession of – to be read). Hopefully this will help me attack these books first.

This next challenge I am joining purely because of the tile and want to post it on my blog.

Here are the 2010 rules: (This was originally posted here.)

  1. Read a minimum of 10 books first published in 2010. You don’t have to buy these. Library books, unabridged audios, or ARCs are all acceptable. To qualify as being first published in 2010, it must be the first time that the book is published in your own country. For example, if a book was published in Australia, England, or Canada in 2009, and then published in the USA in 2010, it counts (if you live in the USA). Newly published trade paperbacks and mass market paperbacks do not count if there has been a hardcover/trade published before 2010.
  2. No children’s/YA titles allowed, since we’re at the ‘pub.’
  3. At least 5 titles must be fiction.
  4. Crossovers with other challenges are allowed.
  5. You can add your titles as you go, and they may be changed at any time.
  6. Sign up at the Pub Challenge site using Mr. Linky.
  7. Have fun reading your 2010 books!

Just a note, I’m not going to pre-post a list….just keep one as I go.

  1. I want to take on the 24 Challenge, but I seriously think I will fail. I guess that means then that I really should take this challenge on. So, I'm committing to the challenge – I will buy no more than 24 books this year.

I use the library a lot, yet I still buy far too many books. Go figure. I'll think I need a book instantly, and if my public library doesn't have it the very second I “need” it, I'll take that as a sign that I simply must buy the book. So, I'll buy the book, and there it will sit in my TBR pile for far too long. Then, when I am getting ready to crack the book, I'll check to see if my library ever bought it – just out of curiosity – and sure enough they will have a copy. If only I'd not had that need for instant gratification….

  2. I can easily take on the 24 challenge–cannot remember the last time I bought a book. PBS has spoiled me and it's easy to limit when you have limited income.

I thought the pub challenge was something else entirely..haha. Think I will have to abstain from it for now. One challenge at a time is enough for me, I think!

  3. @Stacie – I know what you mean. When I see a book I REALLY want to read, I feel like if I go buy it right then, then I will make it the next book I read. Trouble is, by the time I've finished what I had been reading, I've been turned on by something else!

@Julie – I don't blame you… I've picked a few that I know I can do and that will be fun to track…but for every one I'm joining, there are literally 10 or more that I'm ignoring!
